Layering is the always-cold-girl’s best friend, especially when the temperatures are as low as they are now. It can also be an essential and effective styling tool to add interest to your outfits. Knowing how to layer and being risky with your choices can result in some of your favorite outfits, from my own experience. Take a few tips and try them out!
Tips to successfully layer any outfits:
- If layering for warmth, your base layer is essential. Throw on leggings and a long-sleeve tee under your outfit – bonus points if they are thermal bases!
- Use different fabrics and textures for visual appeal and interest. Mix bold textures with smooth. An easily envisioned example is knitted materials with leather and wool.
- Play with different lengths to find what best flatters your body. If you have a long dress or pants, opt for a medium or cropped outerwear, and if you’re wearing a shorter skirt or dress, maybe try a long or midi-length outerwear.
- Don’t add too many colors. There’s a three-color rule – which you do not have to follow, but it can help to not overcomplicate an outfit. You can add color variation by using different shades of the colors.
- Let the layers show! Don’t hide under the layer, instead show off your style by letting your layers show. Layers add interest in the cooler season, so don’t hide it.
- Accessories are your best friend for layering. Scarfs add detail to your neckline, beanies as hair accessories, purses, belts to break up color or accentuate your waistline under the bulk coat, and even socks or legwarmers that keep your ankles warm while adding detail to your outfit. Utilize your accessories to add smaller intricate layers and details to your outfits.
