Swim Essentials: Must-Haves for all the Water Activities

As we enter high summer, being pool or beachside is essential to stay comfortable and enjoy the sunny season. No matter what kind of water-side enjoyment is on your horizon, here is a list of summer essentials to make the most of this heat.

  1. A good quality bathing suit

A bathing suit is a and will always be a summer must. While styles and patterns change with the trends, a simple yet high-quality black or red bikini or one-piece should be something everyone has. Keeping up with the trends is always fun, but having one or two quality staple swimmies will ensure you are always set and ready to be by or in the water.

  1. Water and a sturdy water bottle

The Stanley Cup, and not the one that NHL players are toting around, sure has our hearts. No matter your favorite brand or look of reusable water bottles, staying hydrated and cool while in the heat is a must. Whatever one is the most affordable and functional for your summer lifestyle, be sure to keep it close and filled.

  1. Soft and functional beach towels

I will swear by Turkish beach towels, not only are they thin, fast-drying, and cute, but they also take up less space than the traditional terry cloth beach towel, leaving room in your summer bag for more snacks, books, or whatever else you tote around.

  1. Water-friendly sandals

Invest in a comfortable yet stylish pair of water-friendly sandals for the summer. Being near the water does not necessarily mean you should sacrifice your style. Matisse has a beach line that is water-friendly, affordable, and fashionable for those who have been needing a new summer sandal!

  1. A portable speaker or book to pass the tanning time

For me, Music is a must when enjoying the sun and water. But recently I have also enjoyed reading a few chapters to engage my mind and pass the time. Sweating in the sun does not have to be boring, even if you are alone. Find a good book or playlist prior to your outing, and enjoy yourself while you get a few shades darker.

  1. Water and Tarnish-resistant accessories

Being in the water and heat should not be a reason to avoid accessorizing (unless wanting to avoid certain tan lines is the reasoning!). Checking that your accessories are tarnish or water-resistant is a must in the summer, to avoid wasting money and your jewelry on items that will not last. Kris Nations and some cheaper brands on Amazon have held up wonderfully for me. Check what your accessories are made of before checking out to ensure longevity!

  1. Polarized Sunnies

Protecting your eyes from the UV is important. Plus squinting can cause lines and wrinkles to form faster. Keep a pair of polarized glasses, or even a hat of your choosing in your bag all summer to protect your eyes (and face!). Future you will thank you.

  1. A Cover-up for before and after

A classic cover-up, like a loose-fitting dress or denim shorts and a tee, is a must if your sun time is before or after an outing. No need to change a million times in a day, just hide your bathing suit and you are ready for all the things on your to-do list.

  1. A roomy bag

Whether you are packing for yourself, or including a plus one, a roomy bag to hold all your summer essentials is always a good idea. It’s better to bring a bit more than needed than to forget something and wish you had it! Just make sure it’s something that you feel comfortable getting damp or sandy.

  1. Sunscreen – a must!

While a swoon-worthy tan is probably your goal, skin health should trump your want for a dramatic tan line. Make sure to lather on the sunscreen before you embrace the rays, and don’t forget your neck, head or hairline, ears, hands, lips, and eyelids. Avoiding premature aging and melanoma is always important, especially now. So lather up the sunscreen and SPF!
