Wearing vs Styling

There’s a big difference between wearing your clothes and styling them. Yes, you can throw on a cute outfit, let it hang the way it naturally does, leave the house, and look cute as ever, but taking the time to style an outfit can make a major difference and create a completely different outfit using the same pieces. Stying is manipulating or adjusting your clothes to give the appearance in your mind, not necessarily the way the piece is itself. This can be making a full-length top or sweater cropped by tucking it into a shirt underneath it, turning a midi dress into a skirt, or even layering multiple pieces to achieve a new texture or shape.

Just like anything else in life, styling takes time and multiple tries. It takes practice and experience to figure out what you can do with each piece in your closet, as well as how these pieces match together. Each person will have a different preference and preferred methods to get similar looks. Find some inspirational outfits, and try to copy the styling with what you own. If you really want a challenge, find editorial fashion photos and try to get a similar look. Experience and practice will make the styling process second nature, which is why finding inspiration and attempting to recreate it will help you recognize and remember the patterns of certain pairings and ensembles, allowing you to style similar pieces later without inspiration because of your experience.

Get creative, use safety pins and accessories, and keep experimenting with your pieces. From my experience, some of the best outfits come from risky and unusual stylings. Take those risks and learn how to get the most out of each piece in your closet.
